WE THE PORTUGUESE (II): CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONALITY after the Christian reconquest
During the Reconquista, Portugal was repopulated mainly through the system of granting estates to the military and monastic orders. These settlers, mostly from Galicia, Leon and Asturias (there were Catalans, "franc", Flemish, German and English) formed a local feudal elite associated with the Moorish population (Christians within the system of Muslim domination) . But other populations were incorporated: the Moorish (Muslims) and Jews. These groups are important especially in the Alentejo and the Algarve, living in separate neighborhoods in cities or rural communities forming. The Algarve, the Portuguese region with deeper Islamic influence, recently was conquered by Alfonso III in 1249. Its main town, Silves, was larger than Lisbon. Many Muslim population remained there under Christian allegiance. Thus Portugal was an ethnic mosaic at the time of its independence and the real authority was severely limited by the feudal privileges of the military orders and Church. The policy of the kings Dionisio I (1279-1325), Alfonso IV (1325-1357) and Pedro I (1357-1367) tended to reinforce the central power, economically develop the country and promote national unity. His foreign policy was based on the commercial and political approach to London. The alliance with England, strengthened by the Treaty of Windsor of May 9, 1386, was essential when addressing the Castilian military aggression. One after another they were thwarted with the British military assistance. Also friendship with England paid off when starting the overseas expansion: British soldiers take part in the Portuguese city of Ceuta to the Sultanate Benimerín the August 21, 1415.The Portuguese Jewish community, member of Sephardic or Ladino culture, whose age is dated back to Roman times, was very important in economic and political development of Portugal. Many of its members occupied important positions in the court. But his situation, like that of the Mudejar communities, would be very difficult from 1496 when King Manuel I, of absolutist tendencies, ordered the forced conversion of non-Christian minorities. The result of this disastrous policy was intolerant slaughter of 4,000 Jews and Moors in Lisbon on 19 April 1506 by an angry mob. There was also forced deportation of infidels to Sao Tome and Principe. To make matters worse from 1536 established the Inquisition. Between 1540 and 1794 a total of 1175 people were executed in bonfires. Thousands of Jews fled to America, other European countries, North Africa and Turkey. Testimony of this tragic period is the formation in the twelfth century of endogenous secret community of Jews of Belmonte, who managed to maintain their traditions in complete anonymity until the twentieth century. The wave of intolerance coincides with the peak of Portuguese imperialism.Curious would be the fact that Jewish refugees in Latin American cities would be used as a form of penetration of commercial and political interests of Portugal (and its unconditional ally, England). Indeed, especially the powerful merchant community called "Portuguese" of Buenos Aires (mostly Portuguese Jews), associated with the powerful organization of the "Confederate" (who performed slave smuggling and other illegal activities) would play a role autonomists fundamental conflicts of the Buenos Aires oligarchy in the Rio de la Plata. Faced with death by his sworn enemy, Governor Hernando Arias de Saavedra, the "Portuguese" locals boycotted all attempts to start the colonization of the disputed border region between Spain and Portugal (which became known as the Eastern Band). The reasons for this boycott are in fact intended to safeguard relations with Portugal as a way to protect their not very legal business relations with that power. The systematic destruction of the Portuguese Sephardic culture also meant the virtual disappearance of the Portuguese Jewsih language in the sixteenth century. It developed over history, it was heavily influenced by judeorromance language Ladino or Judeo-Spanish. He survived among the Jews of the diaspora in other countries in Europe and America until the nineteenth century. In fact it forms the basis of current language Saramaccan Papiamento (spoken in the Netherlands Antilles) and (spoken in Suriname and French Guiana). The assimilationist policy of the absolutist regime of the Kingdom of Portugal Portuguese laid the foundations of ethnic nationalism. Its backbone was the language imposed to the full extent of the territory. It developed from the medieval Galician-Portuguese began to differentiate it from the gradual integration of Arabic influences and also English, French, Italian and Castilian. From its source in the northwestern region of the Iberian Peninsula from the Bay of Biscay to the Douro River, its imposition in the southern region of Alentejo and Algarve was the product of the process of Christian reconquest of the territories held by the Muslims. The great promoter of the formalization of the Portuguese king Dionisio I was the one who worked for the impersonation of Latin as official language in the Kingdom. However persists until today a Portuguese enclave where another language is spoken. It is the municipalities of Miranda do Douro, Vimioso, Bragança, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros in the province of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro. Therein lies a descendant of settlers asturleonés source (not Galician, as in the rest of northern Portugal) brought between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries population. The three dialects called Mirandese, riodonorés and guaramilés, spoken by about 15,000 people, are an authentic relic of a lost language. Indeed leonine was practically supplanted by the Castilian Spanish lands in the late nineteenth century.
